The first Monday of October, which happens to be October 5 this year (2009), was declared by the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as World Teacher’s Day.
“World Teachers’ Day, held annually on 5 October since 1994, commemorates the anniversary of the signing in 1966 of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers. It is an occasion to celebrate the essential role of teachers in providing quality education at all levels.” (- UNESCO) This year’s celebration focuses on t”he global teacher shortage and the challenges of being a teacher today.”
Incidentally, the awardees in the Metrobank Foundation‘s Search for Outstanding Teachers for 2009 was announced last September. The awardees are:
Elementary level

- Gemma G. Cortez, Dasmariñas Elementary School (Dasmariñas, Cavite)
- Benjamin M. Martinez, San Sebastian Elementary School (Tarlac City)

- Shena Faith M. Ganela, Philippine Science High School-Western Visayas Campus (Iloilo City)
- Rochelle D. Papasin, Philippine Science High School-Southern Mindanao Campus (Davao City)
- Ma. Petra A. Romualdo, Minapan High School (Tulunan, Cotabato)
- Zoilo J. Pinongcos, Jr., Leganes National High School (Leganes, Iloilo)
Higher education level
- Dr. Dina Joana S. Ocampo, University of the Philippines-Diliman (Quezon City)
