Typhoon Reming Memorial Shrine (Padang, Legaspi)

Let’s check that structure on our way home, we agreed. The structure, three interconnected cross figures, prominently sticks out of the barren landscape framed by the Mayon volcano as a background. We were then on our way to Sto. Domingo to visit its church.

We later learned that the structure, found in Brgy. Padang (Legapi city), is the Typhoon Reming Memorial Shrine, referred to as Padang Memorial by others. The marker reads:

To nature’s beauty and wrath;
To those who perished & others who survived;
You are not forgotten, neither will you ever be.

To Our individual resilience and communal determination;
To Our triumph over tragedy;
Let this mark the change, not the end of strength, hope & peace.

It was 30 November 2006 when Supertyphoon Reming battered the Bicol with winds of 190-kilometer wind. At least 734 died and 2,360 injured and 762 missing.
