Memories of Summer: Warm Thoughts for the Rainy Season

If you haven’t heard the weather agency, PAGASA, declaring the end of summer, the heavy rains in the past days would definitely drive home the point that the Philippines has two seasons — the rainy season and the very rainy season. Well, it has been fun while summer lasted. We sure have enough memories of sunny days to last us the entire rainy season. We’re also sure that you guys saved enough photos of summer. So, in memory of Summer 2017, let’s feature some of your photos. Continue reading Memories of Summer: Warm Thoughts for the Rainy Season

Happy Solitude in Guyam Island, Siargao: Photo of the Day

“Wonderfully lost and hopelessly in love,” Marian Bautista notes in her account profile (check his Instagram account, @yianbautista, for more photos). We get the “wonderfully lost” part — no dount it’s awesome to wander in the surrounding islands of Siargao, including the gorgeous white-beach tiny Guyam Island (yes, we have a separate feature on the crystal-clear waters off Guyam Island). On the second part — hopelessly in love — we’re not sure if Marian is referring to the same island (yes, people, like us, can fall hopelessly in love with the islands of the Philippines) or to some islander. We have to ask her. In the meantime, enjoy the photo (or, better still, go out and enjoy Guyam and Siargao Island). Click the photo to enlarge. Surfing Fun in Urbiztondo, La Union: Photo of the Day

“First of 2017,” said @doktorabucag (check her Instagram account for more photos), implying that it’s not a one-day stand for surfing in Urbiztondo, La Union. This means we get to see more awesome surfing photos. We love surfing, you see, but surfing doesn’t love us back. We know, we know, it’s not hopeless so long as we put it a lot of practice, but it seems we’re now more fit only for internet surfing. But we’re happy watching you guys surf, so keep those surfing photos coming. Click the photo to enlarge. Continue reading Surfing Fun in Urbiztondo, La Union: Photo of the Day

Crystal-Clear Waters of Guyam Island, Siargao: Photo of the Day

We all know that Siargao, with its lovely waves and idyllic views, is hands-down the surfing capital of the Philippines. Not everbody knows, however, that the islands off Siargao can match any other 7,100+ islands of the Philippines when it comes to powder-white sand and crystal-clear waters. This much we see in Guyam Island, one of the three popular islands in Siargao. The Naked Island and Daku Island complete the group. Now, look at this photo by Fonci (check his Instagram acount, @rayfonci, for more awesome photos). Perhaps you’ll think that it’s just the beach and the sky, but look closely and you’ll see that what you might think as the beach, is actually the white sand UNDER the crystal-clear water. Awesome, right? Time to visit Siargao. Click the photo to enlarge. Continue reading Crystal-Clear Waters of Guyam Island, Siargao: Photo of the Day

Go Shower in Tangadan Falls (San Gabriel, La Union): Photo of the Day

How’s your shower this morning? Refreshing? Got one of those showerheads with power nozzles that massage your scalp while you rinse your hair? We don’t have one. We have something even better. And it’s way much cheaper, and way so much more fun, than ’em showerheads. It’s called Tangadan Falls, just one of the beautiful waterfalls you’ll find in the Philippines. Tangadan Falls is located in the town of San Gabriel, La Union, which brings in the awesome bonus of being a few minutes away from the surf scene of the north, San Juan, La Union (just have to add that it one of our favorite spot, Kahuna). It’s like hitting two birds with one stone. Want to see our shower? Here’s a photo courtesy of Jan Gomez Villanueva (check his Instagram acount, @jan_gv). Click the photo to enlarge. Flight of the Gwapito at Cloud 9 Surfing (Siargao): Photo of the Day

There are photos that make us giddy right from the moment we see it. This is one of those photos. It’s a photo of a bird. No, wait, it’s a plane. No, it’s, uhm, a gwapito flying high (gwapito in Bisaya roughly translates to handsome boy, because full-on handsome man is gwapo, pretty much like how a plato [plate] is the bigger version of the platito [saucer]). It’s a photo of @gwapitos.official cofounder, @maramatokong, flying high at the surfing capital of the Philippines, Cloud 9 in Siargao Island (photo courtesy of @gwapitos.official, and island lifestyle brand by Gianni “Boy” Grifoni and John Mark “Marama” Tokong, based in Siargao Island, and  @kermitsiargao; check their instagram profiles for more awesome photos). We’ll get to Siargao soon, and when we do, we challenge you guys to a surfing competition — the variety involving a mouse and wifi. Click the photo to enlarge.

Surf and Beauty in Cloud 9, Siargao: Photo of the Day

What we see of a photo depends equally on what’s important to us and to the one who took the shot. For hard-core surfers who frequent the surfing capital of the Philipppines, Siargao in Surigao del Norte, the focus might be the waves. Those who appreciate the island vibe might focus on the food and the beer, consumed right off the beach. Some might take a shot with perfect proportions. The photo featured here, snapped by Daniela (visit her instagram site, dani_negreda, for other beautiful photos), appears to focus on the clouds (hey, it’s Cloud 9 in Siargao) and, of course, the majesty of the setting (or rising?) sun. There’s so much more we see, but we prefer you tell us through the comment section, or see the place for ourselves. Click photo to enlarge. Surfing in Siargao: It’s More Fun in the Philippines

There’s a lot of unfilled slots in our Philippine travel bucket list. One of those blank slots is Siargao, found in the province of Surigao del Norte, way south of Manila. It’s the undisputed surfing capital of the Philippines, with Cloud 9 at its core. If surfing is our thing, Siargao would be at the top of our travel list, but we don’t surf. Still, we intend to go there someday, not to surf, but to soak in the island vibe (sounds weird because we’re living in an island, sort of, in the first place). For those who don’t understand why surfers are raving about Siargao, watch this video from the Department of Tourism: Continue reading Surfing in Siargao: It’s More Fun in the Philippines

Photo of the Day: Surfing Kinda Day (Doot Poctoy, Lanuza, Surigao)

Travel exposes the falsity in many of people’s misconceptions — from cultures, practices, places, to almost every conceivable aspect of a community’s life. We are, of course, guilty of the same sin. For instance, we’ve always believed that the surfing scene in Surigao can only be witnessed in the island of Siargao. We’re wrong. This photo by Paupau Alvarez (follow her in Instagram, @best.paupau.ever; we really don’t know who’s the photobomber, Paupau or @lenniemariee) is captioned Poctoy, Lanuza, Surigao. While the surging scene of Lanuza was started by surfers from Siargao Island, Lanuza has held up its own as an independent surfing destination. Now we know. All we have to do now is to get those chiseled bodies and that surfer vibe. See you, ladies, in one of ’em Philippine islands. Click the photo to enlarge: Continue reading Photo of the Day: Surfing Kinda Day (Doot Poctoy, Lanuza, Surigao)

Baler (Aurora) Itinerary and Surfing Adventure

Baler is in our travel bucket list for one simple reason — surfing and the good vibe that goes with this sport. We’re not surfers. We’re simply curious about the huge interest in Baler’s surfing scene. We’ve long resolved to cover Baler, almost eight years from the time we finally found the right time and the perfect reason — the perfect storm, if you will — to go there. It was a few days after a strong storm, Typhoon Lando, hit Baler. Here’s our trip itinerary and story (we’ve sandwiched the helpful information, tips and suggestions in the text of the article, just for fun).
