The Smiling Hammock of Sabang, Puerto Princesa: Photo of the Day

We asked our kid what pops in his mind the first time he saw this photo. His answer is, uhm, brilliant: “I don’t know. A hammock?” Yes, it’s a hammock, silly, but look closer. Try this — smile, then squint your eyes and look at the photo, you’ll actually see the tropical universe smiling back at you. You don’t see it? Try opening your mind. The beauty of travel, as in photography, is the option to see the bigger picture or the focused view, even at the same time, and to see what is there or to see with one’s imagination. This no-frill hammock is daring us to kick our feet up, take time off from the daily grind, and relax. We hear the soft, salty breeze and Bobby McFerrin crooning “don’t worry, be happy.” Fortunately for us, Mike Plana graciously agreed that we feature this photo he snapped in Sabang, Puerto Princesa, Palawan (check his Instagram account for more awesome photos). So, going back, look at the photo again and tell us what you see. Click the photo to enlarge. Continue reading The Smiling Hammock of Sabang, Puerto Princesa: Photo of the Day

Boardgame Cafes: Snacks & Ladders, Ludo Boardgame Bar & Cafe, and Laruan Atbp Cafe

A relatively new development is giving us hope that mankind is not doomed to a world where people, even if sitting on the same table, are not talking to each other but are staring on their gadget screens. Ok, we may have stretched that too far. Too optimistic; we can’t really save mankind from doom. It’s more of the hope that kids will start enjoying games with actual physical interaction. No one knows what happens in the next generation, but at least there’s hope that we don’t grow couch potatoes. At least not too soon. We’re talking of boardgames, those games that don’t require electronics to run (the kind that the older generation used to enjoy). These boardgames are served, together with food, in cafes that have sprouted in the metro. Continue reading Boardgame Cafes: Snacks & Ladders, Ludo Boardgame Bar & Cafe, and Laruan Atbp Cafe

Sampaloc Lake (San Pablo City, Laguna): Photo of the Day

It’s amazing when the Philippines looks like it’s not the Philippines. You go around the different islands of the Philippines, and there are more than 7,000 islands, and you discover that it looks like a foreign land. That’s certainly how we felt when we saw the karst landscape of Palawan. That’s the same feeling when we saw this lovely sunset photo of Sampaloc Lake in San Pablo City, province of Laguna, courtesy of Judy Talan (check her Instagram acccount, @judyeatworld, for more photos). Majestic, beautiful nature. Click the photo to enlarge:

Anghalo Falls (San Felipe, Zambales): Photo of the Day

Who dares, wins. That’s the motto of the SAS. Those who dare, win. That’s the phrase used by this lovely photographer, cs_jazz, in her blog. She’s Batman, she says, which is quite problematic in so many levels, but there’s no reason not to believe her description as an iska, a student of the universe, and a bar stool philosopher. Perhaps we all are. We can engage in endless dialectics, on a bar stool, with alcohol prodding our numb brain cells into philosophial overdrive. Perhaps we need to do that sometimes. It’s a fast world out there. Life moves so fast we get left behind every time we blink. It’s an endless chase for each second, a merciless chase that burns out a lot of people. But at certain milestones, we need to cut back, inhale deeply, recharge, refocus. Sharpen our body and soul. It’s a necessary process that we can do in so many hidden corners of the Philippines, like the Anghalo Falls in San Felipe, Zambales (photo courtesy of @cs_jazz; check her Instagram account, @cs_jazz, for more photos). Click the photo to enlarge: Continue reading Anghalo Falls (San Felipe, Zambales): Photo of the Day
