Photo of the Day: Batangas Sea Gypsies

Should you decide to see the Philippines in a slower pace and ride a ship, there’s a high probability that you’ll encounter a group of kids swimming beside the boat, as the ship is about to dock. Anyone not familiar with this sight will think that the kids are putting their lives at risk by swimming too close to the ship. Why are they doing it? Well, to find out, try throwing a coin towards their direction. Nope, they won’t catch it above water. They’ll let it hit the water and catch the coin as it gracefully falls towards the bottom of the sea. These children are descendants of the best natural freedivers there is. They are most uncomfortable living on land. A few of these sea gypsies, badjaos, were spotted in the Batangas port by cherrdon, a nature lover and a volunteer, an off-the-beaten path traveller.
