Jumpstart Your 2017 (Cliff Jumping in Fortune Island Resort, Nasugbu, Batangas): Photo of the Day

The New Year revelries are done — Christmas lights and decorations brought down and packed for the next year, the extra pounds starting to weigh down your belly, and the worries of 2016 left behind. It’s time to face 2017. So, how do you jumpstart the year? Most people do New Year’s resolutions. Some people, however, take it literally. Like Tom Sawyer (check his Instagram account, @whataboutpao, for more photos), enjoying the sun and sea, and jumping off the cliff in Fortune Island Resort, Nasugbu, Batangas. Looks fun. You brave enough to do it? Click the photo to enlarge. Continue reading Jumpstart Your 2017 (Cliff Jumping in Fortune Island Resort, Nasugbu, Batangas): Photo of the Day

Fly High on the Wing of Skylab (Habal-Habal) Motorcycle: Photo of the Day

“Life is a great adventure or nothing,” goes the Instagram profile of jabeenturero, which probably explains why his group embarked on an adventure — one of the greatest adventure undertaken by mankind, we dare say — riding a habal-habal, a remarkable motorcycle ride that requires balance and coordination between the driver, the passengers, and whatever baggage they choose to strap on that hapless motorcycle. It looks like a suicide mission for outsiders, but it’s a normal mode of transportation for locals in some parts of Visayas and in many places in Mindanao. Habal-habal is from the root word “habal,” which means to mount. The habal-habal motorcycle is also called “skylab” in some places, reportedly based on that 70’s space station or a contraction of the phrase “sakay na, lab” (“ride on, love”). The habal-habal or skylab looks more like a plane than a motorcycle (giving full justice to the expression, “I’m not driving fast, I’m flying low”), with planks protruding from both sides and at the back of the motorcycle. It can carry more than TEN people (yes, you got that right, more than 10 people) AND their baggage. Fancy riding on the “wing” of the skylab? You guys should try it at least once. Fresh Strawberries and Yoghurt in Sagada: Photo of the Day

This photo by Jovic FerrerImages (check his Instagram account, @ferrerimages, for more photos) comes with a simple caption: “Yoghurt with fresh strawberries and honey. At Strawberry Cafe, Sagada, Mountain Province, Philippines.” It’s deceptively simple, though. While anyone can get strawberries at their favorite supermarket, these ones are picked fresh from the nearby gardens. And while anyone can have yoghurt-strawberries combo as a treat, it’s just a mere icing on the cake, so to speak, in Sagada. You see, you don’t go to Sagada for the strawberries. It’s just a bonus. You go there for the cool mountain air, the sprawling mountain views littered with pine trees, and, of course, the lovely spelunking adventures. Even Batman would love Sagada. You go to Sagada to fall in love with nature or fall (more) in love with the person with you. Click the photo to enlarge. Continue reading Fresh Strawberries and Yoghurt in Sagada: Photo of the Day

Surfing Fun in Urbiztondo, La Union: Photo of the Day

“First of 2017,” said @doktorabucag (check her Instagram account for more photos), implying that it’s not a one-day stand for surfing in Urbiztondo, La Union. This means we get to see more awesome surfing photos. We love surfing, you see, but surfing doesn’t love us back. We know, we know, it’s not hopeless so long as we put it a lot of practice, but it seems we’re now more fit only for internet surfing. But we’re happy watching you guys surf, so keep those surfing photos coming. Click the photo to enlarge. Continue reading Surfing Fun in Urbiztondo, La Union: Photo of the Day

Hot Kawa Bath is Cool in Tibiao, Antique: Photo of the Day

“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us,” goes the anonymous quote of Ronel Polinar, although it’s hard to see how he can escape the hot kawa “torture” in the Tibiao, Antique. This photo,  courtesy of Ronel Polinar (check his Instagram account, @ron_byaheron, for more photos), harkens back to the dark olden times when cannibals apparently roam the earth. Whereas the prehistoric offerings must be squirming in fear, these two gentlemen of the modern age are definitely smiling with delight inside the kawa (“cauldron”) — with fire underneath. All for fun, of course. So, next time you visit Antique, don’t forget to declare how you prefer to be “cooked” (meaning your “hot bath,” just to be clear).  Click the photo to enlarge. Stroll Among the Clouds and Trees (Mt. Ulap, Itogon, Benguet): Photo of the Day

“Create the life you can’t wait to wake up to,” says Roanne Tañagras (check her Instagram account, @zeroaaanne, for more photos). The second part — a life that one can’t wait to wake up to — is easy as daydreaming. Anyone can imagine paradise in their minds. “Creating a life,” or making it a reality, is another story. Watching the clouds framed by pine trees on rolling hills, or mountains, takes a lot of hard work. Lilke trekking to the top of Mt. Ulap, Ampucao, Itogon, Benguet. It’s not a walk in the park, so to speak, but it’s all worth it. Amazing views and fresh air. Click the photo to enlarge. Continue reading Stroll Among the Clouds and Trees (Mt. Be Happy, through the Bangui Windmills, Ilocos Norte: Photo of the Day

Feeling blue? Now, don’t be sad. It’s hard to be sad seeing the beautiful wonders of the Philippines. Go back in time and live history by driving through Ilocos, or marvel at how lovely modern technology can be when superimposed against a picturesque landscape. Beach and windmills, they appear to go beautifully together, as we can see from this photo in Bangui, Ilocos Norte, courtesy of Mary Oh (check her Instagram account, @maryoohhh, for more photos). So, my dear, don’t be sad; go out and see the beauty of the Philippines. Have fun! Click the photo to enlarge. Continue reading Be Happy, through the Bangui Windmills, Ilocos Norte: Photo of the Day

Skydive and Watch the White Beach from the Sky (Bantayan, Cebu): Photo of the Day

The beaches of the Philippines are among the best in the world. As we’ve noted before, Philippine beaches come in different colors (with same clear waters, though), but it seems the most popular among tourists, both local and foreigners, are the white-sand beaches of these islands. Now, in addition to enjoying the beaches on the ground, what if we tell you that you can watch these white-sand beaches while dropping from the sky? Yes, skydiving has grown popular in Sta. Fe, Bantayan, Cebu, with Skydive Cebu Adventures providing the services. It looks awesome, as we see in this cool photo from Naël Henri Prélaz. There’s no doubt the parachute jump involves a lot of adrenaline rush (and screaming for newbies, who will be paired and inseparably strapped with an experienced skydiver, called a tandem dive), but we’re not doing it. Nope, not for us. It will be a waste of money because we’ll most likely pass out or, worse, have a heart attack. We wouldn’t back out from this extreme sport if were younger (well, maybe yes), but we know a lot of adrenaline junkies will happily jump off from a plane at 10,000 above Bantayan Island. You game to see some islands (uhm, while falling from the sky)? Click the photo to enlarge. Continue reading Skydive and Watch the White Beach from the Sky (Bantayan, Cebu): Photo of the Day

The Lovely Sunset of Punta Bulata (Cauayan, Negros Occidental): Photo of the Day

“Sunsets in the Philippines will always be beautiful,” says Maanyag na Kabuhi in her photo below (the phrase, she explains, means “life is beautiful” in Hiligaynon; check her Instagram acount, @maanyagnakabuhi, for more photos). We don’t doubt that. We love sunsets and while not all sunsets are created equal, sunsets are equally beautiful across the Philippine archipelago. This poster-perfect sunset was captured in Punta Bulata Resort of Cauayan town, around 154 kilometers south of Bacolod City. We really can help but smile while looking at it. The golden sun waving goodbye, the contrast of the darkening sky, the bent coconut trees — all merge to give a sense of serenity in a tropical paradise. Beautiful! Click the photo to enlarge.
