Welcome to the Grapes Capital of the Philippines: Photo of the Day

From the moment Jenielson Canlas (check his Instagram account, @thejenielsoncanlas, for more photos) first posted this photo of grapes, we knew we have a #photooftheday in our hands. Lovely, lovely shades of purple that come alive with the background of bland green leaves. We didn’t realize grapes thrived in the Philippines since the early 1970s in Bauang, La Union. The family-owned grape farms started with the Lomboy Farm, subsequently joined by newer vineyards like the Gapuz Grape Farm. These farms/vineyards are tourist attractions in themselves, complete with meals, giving travelers activities to do in La Union other than surfing. Click the photo to enlarge. Surfing Fun in Urbiztondo, La Union: Photo of the Day

“First of 2017,” said @doktorabucag (check her Instagram account for more photos), implying that it’s not a one-day stand for surfing in Urbiztondo, La Union. This means we get to see more awesome surfing photos. We love surfing, you see, but surfing doesn’t love us back. We know, we know, it’s not hopeless so long as we put it a lot of practice, but it seems we’re now more fit only for internet surfing. But we’re happy watching you guys surf, so keep those surfing photos coming. Click the photo to enlarge. Continue reading Surfing Fun in Urbiztondo, La Union: Photo of the Day

Go Shower in Tangadan Falls (San Gabriel, La Union): Photo of the Day

How’s your shower this morning? Refreshing? Got one of those showerheads with power nozzles that massage your scalp while you rinse your hair? We don’t have one. We have something even better. And it’s way much cheaper, and way so much more fun, than ’em showerheads. It’s called Tangadan Falls, just one of the beautiful waterfalls you’ll find in the Philippines. Tangadan Falls is located in the town of San Gabriel, La Union, which brings in the awesome bonus of being a few minutes away from the surf scene of the north, San Juan, La Union (just have to add that it one of our favorite spot, Kahuna). It’s like hitting two birds with one stone. Want to see our shower? Here’s a photo courtesy of Jan Gomez Villanueva (check his Instagram acount, @jan_gv). Click the photo to enlarge. The Art of Being Alone: Photo of the Day

The high level of connectivity in the modern age, specially in the realm of social media, has, ironically, left so many people lonelier.  It’s easy to get in touch with people, yet it’s depressing that you are only facing your computer or electronic gadget. But being alone need not be about being lonely. There’s a good kind of being alone. In fact, we look forward to the rare times when we can be truly alone, perhaps like Mus (check her Instagram account, @themusinsta for other photos) who’s trying to master the art of soul searching and technology of self timer somewhere in Luna, La Union. We prefer to spend those times out in some quiet corner of the beautiful Philippines, with the surf providing a rhythym to the balmy heat, and the salty breeze gently peeling the worries off our cheeks. Click the photo to enlarge.

Thunderbird Resort Poro Point (San Fernando City, La Union)

If I’m a staff of Thunderbird Resort in Poro Point, and I’m asked to describe why guests should stay here, I would simply say what the resort has to say about itself, that “[h]ere, each elegantly furnished living space swathes you in a snug and serene comfort like no other. Plus, our world-class services and superior amenities are among the many reasons why we are a favored destination for any endeavor. Indeed, our resort offers you the chance to dream, play, and live however way you want.” Continue reading Thunderbird Resort Poro Point (San Fernando City, La Union)

Cool Surfer Girl at the Surfing Capital of the North (San Juan, La Union)

Summer is fast approaching. The sleepy sun is slowly emerging from the horizon in San Juan Beach. While others were still deep in slumber, she was getting ready to start surfing practice and stretching on the beach, right at that point where the sea water heaves its last sigh as it gives up its eternal quest to embrace the whole beach. Surf Camp at Kahuna Beach Resort and Spa (San Juan, La Union)

“When He closes a door, He opens a window,” goes a Christian teaching. And to paraphrase what someone said — that we often meet our destiny in the road we take to avoid it — we often discover something spectacular when don’t get what we want. To be concrete about it, we preferred Thunderbird Resort in Poro Point, La Union. It was fully-booked and we were able to catch the last few remaining slots at Kahuna Beach Resort and Spa found at the town of San Juan, La Union. Churches of Ilocos: Historical Tour and Visita Iglesia

There’s so much to write about in a trip through Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte. Some of the places in Ilocos deserve a separate post, like Pagudpud, while others are lumped according to category just to have a semblance of order. Let’s discuss the different churches in this post. This may be timely for those who wish to visit different churches (visita iglesia) this Holy Week.
