Golden Harvest in Bohol: Photo of the Day

We distinctly remember that scene in the movie Gladiator, where Russell Crowe was dreaming of walking home, his hands touching the golden wheats on the expansive field. It’s a scene about death, sadly, but it illustrates our longing to get home and spend time in what we consider paradise. Our featured photo is not of wheat, but rice — golden and ripe for harvest, somewhere in Candijay, Bohol. There’s rice, being the staple food, in practically every corner of the Philippines, but as noted in one of our conversations, it’s not what you look at, but what you see. You don’t see the golden rice of Bohol in isolation from the fine beaches, the wondrous chocolate hills, and all the sights and sounds of this amazing island. You appreciate the crispness of the golden color in the middle of this island paradise. Simply beautiful. Photo courtesy of Nataniel and Maria Evelyn (check their Instagram acount, @wandernshoot, for more photos). Click the photo to enlarge. Chocolate Hills Hopping, Bohol: Photo of the Day

If there’s island hopping, an activity as normal in the Philippine archipelago as breathing, there’s also such as thing as hills hopping. Okay, we’ve made that up, but how do you explain this photo by ninthveno (check his Instragram acount, @ninthveno, for more photos), apparently jumping from one Chocolate Hill to another? Looks pretty awesome if you ask us. Imagine the computer game Super Mario Brothers, except that Mario and Luigi would be jumping on hundreds of Chocolate Hills of Bohol (if they get tired, they can just relax on the gorgeous beaches of Panglao). So, come visit the Philippines; you’ll never run out of things to do or see. Click the photo to enlarge.

It’s More Fun in the Philippines: How Many Chocolate Hills?

We’ve long wondered exactly how many individual Chocolate Hills are there, but we never got down to actual planning exactly how to do that. Good thing the Department of Tourism came out with this awesome video promoting the Philippines, Bohol in particular, and inviting everyone to come visit and see the Philippines. We won’t grow tired echoing this invitation. So, whether you’ve seen the Chocolates Hills or you’ve always wondered how many there are, you’ll enjoy this great video. Watch! Share! Gas Station Toilet: More Fun in the Philippines

Bohol is now more than the Chocolate Hills, the heavenly white beach of Panglao Island, the tarsier, the Loboc River cruise, the old churches, the man-made forest and other attractions. It now hosts one of the MOST important needs of any serious traveler — the toilet. Call it what you want — comfort room, restroom, or any other name — but it’s ideally a place of peace and comfort. We know, of course, that a clean toilet is a rarity for travelers on the road (but, mind you, seasoned travelers can do it the “natural” way). Imagine a CLEAN toilet. Imagine a CLEAN and ELEGANT toilet of a gas station. Now, stop imagining and go to Bohol. You’ll find this SHELL station (yes, we have to emphasize that it’s a Shell station as a token of appreciation for a gas station that takes a little from its billions of profits and gives back to motorists in the form of an ACTUAL, REAL clean toilet). We haven’t seen something like this, which is why we have this story about toilets. We hope other Shell stations follow suit. We hope ALL other gas stations follow soon (tell us which gas station has done so and we’ll feature them). Here, watch this video courtesy of Filipino-Canadian Jason Godfrey: Continue reading Gas Station Toilet: More Fun in the Philippines
