It’s not the first time that we’ve featured this sexy volcano, Mt. Mayon, better known as the world’s perfect volcano cone (we’ve wrestled with the use of “most perfect cone” and thought there’s no need to use “most” if it’s already “perfect”) . Mayon Volcano can be very coy, usually out of sight, covered by thick clouds most of the day. We’re going to let you in on a secret: go to Mount Mayon before 7:00 in the morning and you’ll have a better chance of seeing the volcano in all its glory. It’s worth every ounce of strength you summon to wake up real early. You’ll jump (“talon,” a Filipino word, means “jump”) when you see it, either out of sheer joy or for plain fun. Take, for instance, Kristine Labayen Reyes (check her Instagram account, @krissyseyer, for more photos), who captioned her photo below: “Jump for joy! Mayon volcano is out at last showing her perfect cone shape.” That’s one helluva split jump, don’t you think? Summer vacation. Perfect time to go on a road trip, whether down to the beach or up to Baguio. Sure, taking the plane is more comfortable, but taking the car could be fun. How about going to the beach, seeing Mayon Volcano, and swimming with butanding (whale sharks) in one trip? That, my dear bakasyonista, would lead you to a 550-kilometer journey from Manila to Bicol (550 kilometers, more or less). Continue reading Itinerary from Manila to Bicol (Legaspi and Donsol)
The Cagsawa Ruins and the Beautiful Mayon Volcano
She’s so beautiful. The moment we emerged from the tree canopies and the clouds lifted, there she was, the perfect cone volcano that we’ve only read about. We’ve seen the photos. We’ve heard the stories. But nothing prepared us for this moment. We were in awe upon seeing Mount Mayon. To use the more current language, OMG, she rocks, big time! That’s literally figuratively speaking. Continue reading The Cagsawa Ruins and the Beautiful Mayon Volcano
