Surprise at Wham! Burgers

We all love superheroes. Ok, maybe mostly boys idolize their superheroes, but most probably everyone has seen what a “komiks” looks like. There’s the usual illustration and, in case of a fight scene, big, bold words that surprisingly communicate what we see in movies. Boom! Bang! Kapow! Zoom! And in case of a big, huge punch to the face: wham!

If we’re not mistaken, this is the kind of ambiance portrayed in the joints of Wham! Burgers (rate and review). The colors are warm and solid, but this seems to be normal with other hamburger joints. However, the font and design of the signage are dead giveaways. Naming the burgers as Wham! (rate and review) and Kapow confirms this belief. Another burger, the Bronco (rate and review), sounds exactly like a Western cowboy character.

Also just like the comics, there are typos, which is surprising given the years that Wham! Burgers has been operating. The menu board above the counter in its branch in SM Fairview states that the Bronco Burger has western style 1/3 “pund” all beef patty.

Of course, the look and feel of a place (typos and all) do not necessarily reflect the taste of the food served. We’ve long been told that if we want to start the burger challenge, we should take time to try Wham! Burgers. Surprisingly, it took us years to do so. As they say, good things come to those who wait.

[Rate and review Wham! Burgers, or its Wham Burger) and Bronco Burger.]

Wham! Burgers prides itself as a “gourmet burger quick service restaurant that serves only the freshest 1/3 pound pure beef in every burger.” It’s indeed one of the better fastfood burgers we’ve encountered. Juicy, delicious beef patty. Nice bun. Good taste.

At P119, the Wham Burger, which is “1/3 pound all beef patty with ketchup, mustard, lettuce and tomato, absolutely char grilled,” is less inexpensive, yet tastes just as great, as its counterparts in other chains. The Broncho Burger, which is “western style 1/3 pound all beef patty with bacon, American cheese, fresh onion slices, topped with barbeque sauce,” is equally less expensive at P182.

In all, Wham! Burgers is a good experience, except, perhaps, the distraction caused by the loud conversation, of all people, by the staff at the counter. Even when we discuss how the burgers taste, we do so with hushed voices in order not to disturb other patrons enjoying their burgers. We want to enjoy our burger in peace. We want to zone out distractions and, as we take the first bite, wait for something to hit our culinary senses, with something that, if written, resembles a big “Wham!”
