We’ve seen flamingos, with their long, slender legs sticking out high above the water. In the Philippine setting, because we haven’t seen flamingos in this side of the equator, we’ve seen herons, their long, slender legs similarly sticking out ricefield paddies, their white bodies reflected by the calm waters. Replace the heron, or the pink flamingos, with white cottages that glow orange-red with the glorious sunset, and you have the Stilts Calatagan Beach Resort.
The name Stilts is most likely intended to reflect the general architectural design of the cottages in this resort — a series of traditional cogon-roofed huts that dare stretch out towards the sea, with slender supporting beams that resemble the nimble legs of herons or, if you’re familiar with the pink relatives, the flamingos. We’ll never know if that’s the intention and we didn’t bother to ask the beautiful bespectacled lady who happens to run the place, lest our opinion be clouded by our fondness for this friend (hi Mina).
We’ve heard a thing or two about the Stilts, but nobody told us about its amazing golden sunsets (is a good thing because we love surprises). We should have expected it because this, after all, is Calatagan. We’re no strangers to the gorgeous of Calatagan but we never factored that in when we decided to head out to seek Stilts one lazy weekend afternoon. We could spend the whole article talking about the sunset but that would be veering off from the topic at hand (besides, we’ve already done that in a previous article: The Beautiful Sunset of Calatagan).

Resorts are awe-inspiring for a number of reasons. Some resorts are found in secluded, hard-to-reach places, with white beaches and crystal-clear waters. The view simply blows you away. Some resorts boast of spanking new infrastructure and equipment, with top service to boot. Some resorts have elements of both, with hidden charm. It ain’t love at first sight; it’s love that grows on you. Pretty much like the Stilts Calatagan Beach Resort.
