New 7 Wonders of Nature Nominees: Philippine Natural Wonders

Let me guess, you stumbled on this site looking for relevant information about vacation spots in the Philippines. Or maybe you followed a link. Or maybe…well, whatever the reason why you’re here, there’s something helpful that you could do to promote the wonders of the Philippines. It’s so simple — since you have an internet access (otherwise, you won’t be reading this post), just vote for the Philippine wonder as nominee for the New 7 Wonder of Nature.

According to the FAQ, only one national nominee per country will be allowed to proceed: the highest ranked in the voting on 31 December 2008. The top Philippine choice is Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, which means that the following are no longer included:

Tubbataha Reef (No. 3, previously No. 8 in May 2008)
Chocolate Hills (No. 5, previously No. 9 in May 2008)
Mayon Volcano (No. 11)
Hundred Islands National Park (No. 44)
Mount Pinatubo (No. 47)

There will be a new round of voting until July 7, 2009. Then the New7Wonders of Nature Panel of Experts will review the top 77 nominees and choose the 21 finalists, to be announced on 21 July 2009. Voting will then commence for the 21 New7Wonders of Nature Finalists throughout 2010 and into 2011. The final declaration will be in 2011. (See full text of the rules below.)

    Very well said, everyone.

Rey, thanks for the update. Wow, it’s good to know that the Underground River is now No. 1. While we’re at it, let’s not forget the following Philippines sites that are also in the list: Tubbataha Reef (No. 3), Chocolate Hills (No. 5), Mayon Volcano (No. 11), Hundred Islands National Park (No. 44) and Mount Pinatubo (No. 47). Again, just a friendly reminder: voting at this stage is only up to December 31, so better hurry and vote.

An update, from the 7wonders site: Between Jan. 1 and Jan. 7 2009, all voting on the New7Wonders website is on hold as the results of the national qualifications are calculated and verified. On Jan. 7, 2009, the leading national nominees will be announced here, and voting will resume for all multinational nominees and the remaining national nominees.

I thought there were changes in the Rules along the way. So just to be sure, here’s what appears in the FAQ of the new7wonders site:

There are three stages in the New7Wonders of Nature campaign: the National Qualification, the Nomination stage and the Finalist stage:

    1. On 1 January 2009, only one national nominee per country will be allowed to proceed: the highest ranked in the voting on 31 December 2008. Therefore until the end of 2008, countries with more than one nominee will be racing to choose the national representative that is allowed to continue into 2009. Nominees shared by more than one country will remain and continue into 2009.
    2. In the Nomination stage, voting for nominees will continue through July 7, 2009. Then the New7Wonders of Nature Panel of Experts, under the leadership of Prof. Federico Mayor, former Director-General of UNESCO, will review the top 77 nominees and choose the 21 finalists, to be announced on 21 July 2009.
    3. For the Finalist stage, the 21 New7Wonders of Nature Finalists will be put to popular vote in July 2009. Voting will continue throughout 2010 and into 2011. During this time, the New7Wonders World Tour will visit each of the Finalists to allow them to present themselves to the voters across the globe.

The final declaration of the New7Wonders of Nature will be in 2011.
