Hi hill, como esta? I'm not really sure what are the national activities; haven't heard of any. Perhaps other readers who know something about this could inform us.

As to the Spanish language, we had Spanish I and II in college, but both subjects were elective (and I now can't recall what we've learned). I didn't know that it was phased out (and I didn't know that it was reintroduced). All along I thought that it was there, except that it was not mandatory. I agree it should stay that way.

Hola Fred. Buenos dias desde Espana!
Happy Independence day to you and everybody in the Philippines. Do you know of any national activities that the government has come up with on the day itself? What a shame I can't be there to enjoy the celebrations. Here in Marbella, we're celebrating one week of fiesta/feria and banking and schools are half-day only. Fred, I read recently that the Spanish language has been re-introduced to all schools. That's good news indeed. Why on earth was it scrapped in the first instance anyway, and who was responsible for scrapping it, if I may ask? As usual, our kapwa-Pinoy will be playing "catch-up".
I hope many of our kababayan will take up the offer of learning a major language, apart from English of course. I just met a Filipino builder, who, incidentally, we've contracted to refurbish one of our bathrooms. Since we've never met before, we would speak Spanish...then after he met my British husband, we would switch to English. Although we have also asked other Spanish builders for a quotation, we decided to give the job to him since he was more reasonable. Besides, why shouldn't I give the job to him when he has shown interest in doing the job right away?
Anyway, Fred, have a great celebration on our Independence day! I'll follow up developments from here, After all, Spain was our "mother country " for three hundred years.
