The upward trend in Philippine travel continues. For instance, the number of international and domestic tourists in 2009 increased by 14%, from 8.7 million tourists in 2008. Then there was an increase of 10%, and that’s for the first six months of 2010 alone, attributed to the improved economic condition.
The Inquirer also reports more expansion plans in 2011 by Philippine domestic airlines: Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines (PAL), Air Phil Express, Zest Airways, and SEAir. These expansions are reported to be spurred by the improvement in people’s income, dropping of ticket prices and the appetite to see more places.
It seems more Filipinos, for one reason or another, want to travel.
Is it partly due to a bigger paycheck among Filipinos? I don’t know. Whether any progress translates to a better financial condition among Filipinos in general is beyond the travel focus of this blog (and it’s better that way). Still, whether Filipinos have more money to spare for travel seems to be immaterial — Filipinos, even with the same level of income years before, could afford to travel given the promos and discounts given by airlines and other tourism-related establishments.
But let’s take a step back. Is there really an increased appetite among Filipinos to travel? Again, I don’t know, so it’s a good time to ask you. Do you have an increased appetite for travel? See poll below. Comments also below.
