Historical Places in Sto. Domingo, Albay

The town of Sto. Domingo in the province of Albay is an old town, having been created as a municipality in 1749. Formerly named “Libog”, which is derived from the “libot” (in the Bicol dialect, the word means “roundabout”), it was created as a municipality in 1749, called Ibalon. In 1959, it was renamed to its patron saint, Saint Dominic of Guzman.

Plaza Pugad Lawin and the Municipal Hall. The plaza looks good by itself. The view is highlighted by the Sto. Domingo Church, the municipal hall and the Potenciano Gregorio Mausoleum, all of which surrounds the Plaza Pugad Lawin.

Potenciano Gregorio, Sr. Mausoleum. The mausoleum, according to its historical marker, memorializes the life and works of an immensely tralented Bicolano. It is a tribute to this great Bicolano composer and musical genius, composer of the “Sarung Banggi”, a “ballad that has an enduring place in Philippine musical heritage and in every Bicolano’s heart.”

Around 30 minutes from the city of Legaspi, in the province of Albay, is a little sleepy town of Sto. Domingo. This is an off-route place when visiting Legaspi as a jump-off point to Donsol, Sorsogon.
