Father’s Day, the special day reserved once a year in honor of fathers, is celebrated in the Philippines, just like in many parts of the world. When is Father’s Day?
In the Philippines, Father’s Day is celebrated every third Sunday of June. For this year, 2009, Father’s Day falls on June 21. That’s this weekend.
And this is not an official holiday. (Some may say it doesn’t matter since it falls on a Sunday. Many fathers, however, are required to work on Sundays, which means that it would matter.)
We really don’t know when Father’s Day was first celebrated in the Philippines. If someone knows the origin of Father’s Day in the Philippines (or how this practice was transplanted here), please tell us through the comment section below.
This may also be a good time to ask how you spend Father’s Day. Do you treat your dad (or tatay, papa) to eat outside, a spa or some place special? Do you just buy gifts for your dad? Do you just stay at home and spend quality time together? Or you just forget about it.
Again, please use the comment section below. Thank you.

Buenos dias, Fred.
Happy Father’s Day indeed…
But, how did it originate in the first place? No doubt it has to be an “American” thing…just like “Mother’s Day, Grandparents’ Day, Thanksgiving Day, Earth Day, Women’s Rights and a list of etcetera…Good or bad? No idea. The point is, at least fathers and mothers are recognised worldwide and thanks to the Americans if they thought of it first.
Anyway, I just would like to say that I really like your format. I think it is the best format yet—very well thought-out. Please don’t ever change it. Wouldn’t it be nice
if all sites were like yours?
Keep up the good work. Cheers!

Hill, I tried to check the origin in the Philippines but no luck in the initial search. It’s logical, though, that it got transplanted from the US as you mentioned.
And thanks for the kind words. Every site has something to offer, I guess, and I hardly consider this as the best (though, I must say, it’s gratifying to know you consider this as the “best format” in your book =). Coming from you, that means a lot.
